Pablo Reyes - Assignment II - Tape Mapping

Concept:

Inspired by the origins of this origami crane, I constructed a composition in which all of my hypothesis regarding the nature of such are designed in a single layout.

Crane Setup

Process:

The creation of this composition was serviced by a pre-made origami stop motion which served as the main video, free footage of a swan swimming on a lake, and a slow-motion cloud formation visual. The videos were compiled in adobe premiere pro and animated in adobe after effects.

MadMapper Setup

After Effects Sound Reaction Process

Interpretation:

This video represents three theories regarding the origin of the crane: The first is that of a single piece of white paper, folded with care yet accurately, it initially transforms into a more organic form of a crane then into a standard origami style. A second theory involves a reversed transformation, from an organic shape into a two-dimensional form. Lastly, a third theory is based on a formation of clouds that were compiled and compress until the crane shape was formed.

Concept:

Inspired by the music video Human by SEDVALIZA, this composition is organized as of how I perceive the visual to be projected into the following static wireframe.

2 Projector Setup-Left Projector

2 Projector Setup-Right Projector

Process:

The composition was edited in adobe's after effects and premiere pro, within the latter a series of masks were created in reference to the rectangle design of the right projector, as well as a sound reactive opacity. On the opposite side of the design, the sound reactive rectangle lines were animated in after effects implementing the keyframing assistant, a blender effect, and the ease(value, x,y, minx, max,y)  expression. The animated lines on the sculptures, speakers, the projector, and the pipe, were created within the MadMapper software using the projector as a reference.

After Effects Masking

Interpretation:

The meaning of this composition relies on SEVALIZA's song Human, which was introduced by a friend of mine, during a trip to Cici's pizza. I interpret the video of this piece as stating that she is a human despite her minotaur half and with the lyrics, "I am flesh, bones, I am skin, soul, I am human, Nothing more than human" resonates with my perspective on how one should compare itself to another being.

Concept:

This creation was inspired by the lamp setup and the functionality behind candle lanterns, though they are not convenient during such modern times, I always wanted to own one thus the following composition.

Lantern Setup

Process:

Pre-made footage of some animated 3d candles was taken into adobe after effects and altered using a scatterize effect, sound reactive scale transformation, and color correction. The orange lines and sound reactive ellipses were animated within MadMapper.

MadMapper Setup

After Effects Sound Reactive Process

Interpretation:

This is a lantern that is traveling through space. A distorted flame appears whenever the lamp goes through a wormhole and arrives at a dimension where enough gravity allows its shape to remain unified.

Concept:

I drink monster's zero ultra energy drink whenever I need that extra push. The latter inspired this composition to be a commercial implementation of projection mapping where the company would project this on a wall next to a corner store and even a building.

Lion Setup

Process:

Compiled in adobe's premiere pro, a monster energy drink 3d animation commercial by youtube user Vproductions was altered one and at times two mirror effects in order to create a kaleidoscope visual, creative lumetri color corrections and a glitch reaction to Monster Energy's logo made from scratch.

MadMapper Setup

Interpretation:

Power, energy, and lots of movement are all I think when I see a visual of a lion, thus this composition is created based on such. I decide to keep the original audio of the animated commercial since it produced an active yet controlled sense of energy, which represents the feeling I get whenever I drink my emergency dose of this energy drink.

Chelsey Suarez: Projection 2 - Tape Mapping

·         Crane Composition 1:

o   Concept – For both of the crane compositions the idea of flight and travel came to mind. For this initial composition the idea of flight in the day throughout a landscape dictated the design. The idea was to have a crane flying over an area to signify a type of individual serenity. An animal such as a crane holds meaning as a symbol for serenity and peacefulness and this is what drove the main theme for this first composition.

Initial Crane comp 1 design

o   Process – Due to the idea of flight and serenity I wanted to attempt to animate the crane by tracing its initial position within Aftereffects, and then retrace the crane with the wings in a different position. The idea was to oscillate between the two wing positions to make the crane appear as if it were in flight. After the general flight motion was achieved I brought the movie file into mad mapper and started to work with the materials to create a cohesive idea. Additionally I brought in a stock video file from Pexel Video of a cloud transition. By bringing in the cloud video in addition to the using the materials in mad mapper I created various duplicates of the crane and background mask to layer on details. The final piece is a balance of the crane flight video, cloud video, and two material layers.

Final Crane comp 1 design

o   Interpretation – The final product, where the crane is in flight against its complementary blue and violet sky accurately emphasizes the idea of serenity within the individual. The background noise used in the background layer also adds the idea of solidarity as static noise if often associated with emptiness and or solitude. The final image uses the tools and found assets to create a feeling of individual serenity.

·         Crane Composition 2:

o   Concept – To juxtapose the first crane concept of “individual serenity” I decided to implement themes of calmness and serenity through a community rather than the individual. While we are all independent and the idea of being able to function as an individual is an important notion to have, it is also important to consider the power that a community can have on an individual – crane or human.

o   Process – Similarity to the first crane the main created element was the flapping wings. In addition to the wings, within Aftereffects I was able to precompose the original flapping wing motion layer on top of a solid filled crane to incorporate other cranes in the scene. After importing the movie file into mad mapper I went out to find supplemental assets. Using stock footage from Pexel Video I found a starry night, and rising moon video. Both videos were used to layer on the idea of nighttime within the background and the crane body. After all assets were implemented I used the mad mapper materials and lines to add more detail. In contrast to the previous crane this design uses darker colors to emphasis the night and uses the accompanying cranes in addition to the stars to unify the elements in the scene. One of the final steps of the creation of the composition was adjusting time and the motion of the cranes to further emphasis the ideas of being calm and unified.

Final Crane comp 2 design

o   Interpretation – The final product displays a sense of unity compositionally and thematically. The assets and tools used helps to further the idea of serenity through community and the importance of both the individual as itself and the individual as part of a whole.

·         Lantern Composition 1:

o   Concept – For the first lantern composition I decided to incorporate a commercial aspect to the design that encompasses an advertisement for a sporting good store, “Gray Lantern Sporting Goods”. The idea was to create a simple design on the lantern itself that would emphasis camping and being outdoors to attract customer to make purchases at Grey Lantern.

Start clip Lantern comp 1
End clip Lantern comp 2

o   Process – Once again in Aftereffects I went through the entire lantern design tracing the individual shapes and giving them color. After the lantern was completely traced I created key frames that could quickly change the opacity of the individual shapes to reveal the lantern design part by part. Each shape has its opacity key frames offset where the previous shape’s reveal would cause the following shape to be revealed. Once complete the movie file was imported into mad mapper in addition to a stock Pexel Video movie of a hiking/camping scene, and a sound clip of the wilderness. All assets were aligned together to appeal to the customer in order to have them make purchases at Gray Lantern. In order to have the main focuses of this composition to strictly make camping and being outdoors appealing to the audience I kept the extra map mapper material effects to a minimum. The main reason people go camping and hiking is to find serenity and to escape the noise of urban/suburban living and including extra effects seemed to appeal to more of an urban population rather than the intended customers of Gray Lantern Sporting Goods.

o   Interpretation – The final composition used simple designs and themes to make an appealing advertisement for a sporting goods store. Design choices were made to align with the theme of a sporting good/ camping store and its customers. Through simple animation and subtle sound clips the composition encompasses the calmness of being one with the outdoors.

·         Lantern Composition 2:

o   Concept – For the second lantern design I wanted to focus of the literal purpose and “look” of lantern. Much like one may spend time looking at a campfire fire to marvel I wanted to mimic that appealing factor for light being emitted from a lantern. Dim light in a dark space emphasizes the calming elements of light and that was the driving factor of this design.

o   Process – Similarly to the previous lantern design I traced the individual shapes that made up the lantern design in Aftereffects and then proceed to create a tessellating effect by dropping each shape of the lantern into place one by one. After the effect was complete I worked with several Aftereffect effects to add a glow and gradient to the middle part of the lantern to make it seem like the lantern was actually emitting light. To help create a loop able design I used a burn film effect to disintegrate the lantern before it reappeared again. Once the movie file was ready I imported it into mad mapper and began to layer on materials to make a more appealing image. The background as mentioned in the concept section was kept to be a dark color and I decided on a dark green to complement all the reds in the lantern design.

Final Lantern comp 2

o   Interpretation – Through the incorporation of Aftereffect effects and combination with mad mapper materials I was able to create a composition that embodies the idea of a lantern emitting light within a dark scene. The composition imposes themes of serenity solitude in opposing ways to the other compositions made for this project.

David Rake Projection 2: Tape Mapping

Cabinets
Concept:
I saw the Cabinets as a perfect setup to create a piano setup. There are 12 cabinets and that results in just one key short of an C to C octave. I created the piano using a standard USB keyboard, using the keys " ` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - " I made the piano using Max and it roughly plays the right frequencies.
Jeremiah Baker made a Color randomizer for the tape setup that I could overlay with the piano.

I also used the cabinets as a piano and played the Nationwide Insurance Jingle. I changed the color of the keys to be Orange when I pressed them and it was inverted in MadMapper to create Blue.

Techniques:
In Max, In the Sound Patcher, I recorded the keys as input values and ported them to a bus that would only output specific places based on the input value. When a key is pressed it would output a bang (On/1) and open a gate to let sound through and also trigger a delay to turn the gate back off after a short time. It would also send another bang to a 255 value to an output to input in the visual patcher. In the Visual Patcher, the values sent out from the Sound Patcher would change the color of a visual block to white. All twelve of these blocks would then get assigned a position on a grid (At the same time could be assigned a color for the Nationwide version) and the entire grid would be sent as one texture output through Spout to MadMapper. In MadMapper the grid was inverted in colors to be white by default instead of black. Each Cabinet was assigned to a different section of the grid. When a key was pressed only the corresponding section of the grid would change color and change the Cabinet color

Dual Projectors
Concept:
Within Max I found a built in module to interpret images as starting cells for John Conway's Game of life. I took the line files and recreated them in Photoshop to get the lines darker so they processed better with Max.

Techniques:
I imported the pictures into Max after moving the pictures to a specific Library for Max in Program Data. The picture them got pulled into the Max visual matrix and all pixels that were not completely white or transparent were changed to black. Black pixels served as starting cells for the simulation and the background changed to black and the cells changed to white. The simulation plays out slowly frame by frame and I set a delay to restart it after a short delay so the life cells stayed close to their origin thus maintaining shape. The simulation was ported over to MadMapper via Spout. In MadMapper all I had to do was to align the outputs with the lines since Max had distorted the images.

Llama
Concept:
I really liked creating the interactive piano for the cabinets and wanted something else that was interactive. I thought of the infinity created with two mirrors and replicated that effect with the projector and a webcamera. The first video was filmed during the day.

Techniques:
I put the webcamera closer to level with the tape and masked the output within MadMapper. Using the Tape itself with the camera was too difficult as the camera would just blur any excess light coming in. I added the lines and created a Purple Color with them and created a Purple Tint for the Camera layer as well. How much excess light is present determines how quickly the Purple color blurs and creates the Blue Haze. I tinkered with the color profiles to minimize the Blue and found that a lower Opacity for the camera layer makes all the difference to create the 3D effect. I added a Vertex Noise effect to the Camera Layer in MadMapper to create the swaying effect. I also created two quads that periodically light up for the eyes to help emphasize the backwards movement. The second video was filmed at night and shows how a lower surrounding light level drastically changes the effect.

Kuo-Wei Lee Project 2: Tape Mapping (Week 4-6)

Before the project start, this project called Tape Mapping.
Therefore, it's important to do the first step: Tapping!

I chose Origami Crane as my first pattern, Origami (折り紙, from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper" (kami changes to gami due to rendaku)) is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture.

Once I finished my draw in adobe illustrator(Ai), I turned the file into Madmapper, and then set it to the proper position which we would like to represent. After that, we projected it on the wall as a reference to start tapping.

Tapping Timelapse

Origami Crane

Concept:

I really addicted to using adobe illustrator, and this project basically base on "low poly art" style, which I love it very much. Therefore, I tried to use extremely simple way to compose my first art work: line. There's is a function called blend tool in the illustrator. I mostly used this function to present my tape mapping project. The art I created I name for Blending Vector Art which almost just use simple vector lines to create artwork.

Crane Composition 01: Vector Crane with Minimalist Style

Process:

I used blend mode in Ai to try and draw patterns. There are some patterns I think is good to use in my project.

Blending Vector Patterns

Then I exported them as a SVG file which can be imported into Madmapper to become a line set, and there's the process:

Crane Composition 02: Vector Crane with The Starry Night

Concept:

This time, I would like to try something different, I would not only make the object(Crane) alive, but also make background vivid. Then it reminded me that the artist, Vincent van Gogh, whose artworks are very famous on bold strokes. I think that I can take advantage of Madmapper and illustrator to create a vivid starry night.

Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night

Process:

I used the starry night not just a background, but also the reference which I created a new blending strokes on the top layer to play in Madmapper.

Cabinet Composition 01: Vector Cabinet with Minimalist Style

The second setup I picked Scott's cabinet artwork to design my composition. Just the same way as previous Crane work, I used Ai to generate the potential blending patterns for this work.

I really love this artwork, so I did several iterations on it, cannot choose which is the best one. Therefore I posted them all on the blog!

Cabinet Composition 02: Commercial Presentation – ripple

https://ripple.com

The world’s only enterprise blockchain solution for global payments.

Concept:

Ripple is a real-time gross settlement system, currency exchange and remittance network by Ripple. Blockchain is a digital decentralized ledger, a technology behind bitcoin or any encrypt currency. The p2p connection inspired me to create this artwork.

Process:

I used this molecular animation video from youtube to present that the point to point connection.
