Chelsey Suarez: Projection 2 - Tape Mapping

·         Crane Composition 1:

o   Concept – For both of the crane compositions the idea of flight and travel came to mind. For this initial composition the idea of flight in the day throughout a landscape dictated the design. The idea was to have a crane flying over an area to signify a type of individual serenity. An animal such as a crane holds meaning as a symbol for serenity and peacefulness and this is what drove the main theme for this first composition.

Initial Crane comp 1 design

o   Process – Due to the idea of flight and serenity I wanted to attempt to animate the crane by tracing its initial position within Aftereffects, and then retrace the crane with the wings in a different position. The idea was to oscillate between the two wing positions to make the crane appear as if it were in flight. After the general flight motion was achieved I brought the movie file into mad mapper and started to work with the materials to create a cohesive idea. Additionally I brought in a stock video file from Pexel Video of a cloud transition. By bringing in the cloud video in addition to the using the materials in mad mapper I created various duplicates of the crane and background mask to layer on details. The final piece is a balance of the crane flight video, cloud video, and two material layers.

Final Crane comp 1 design

o   Interpretation – The final product, where the crane is in flight against its complementary blue and violet sky accurately emphasizes the idea of serenity within the individual. The background noise used in the background layer also adds the idea of solidarity as static noise if often associated with emptiness and or solitude. The final image uses the tools and found assets to create a feeling of individual serenity.

·         Crane Composition 2:

o   Concept – To juxtapose the first crane concept of “individual serenity” I decided to implement themes of calmness and serenity through a community rather than the individual. While we are all independent and the idea of being able to function as an individual is an important notion to have, it is also important to consider the power that a community can have on an individual – crane or human.

o   Process – Similarity to the first crane the main created element was the flapping wings. In addition to the wings, within Aftereffects I was able to precompose the original flapping wing motion layer on top of a solid filled crane to incorporate other cranes in the scene. After importing the movie file into mad mapper I went out to find supplemental assets. Using stock footage from Pexel Video I found a starry night, and rising moon video. Both videos were used to layer on the idea of nighttime within the background and the crane body. After all assets were implemented I used the mad mapper materials and lines to add more detail. In contrast to the previous crane this design uses darker colors to emphasis the night and uses the accompanying cranes in addition to the stars to unify the elements in the scene. One of the final steps of the creation of the composition was adjusting time and the motion of the cranes to further emphasis the ideas of being calm and unified.

Final Crane comp 2 design

o   Interpretation – The final product displays a sense of unity compositionally and thematically. The assets and tools used helps to further the idea of serenity through community and the importance of both the individual as itself and the individual as part of a whole.

·         Lantern Composition 1:

o   Concept – For the first lantern composition I decided to incorporate a commercial aspect to the design that encompasses an advertisement for a sporting good store, “Gray Lantern Sporting Goods”. The idea was to create a simple design on the lantern itself that would emphasis camping and being outdoors to attract customer to make purchases at Grey Lantern.

o   Process – Once again in Aftereffects I went through the entire lantern design tracing the individual shapes and giving them color. After the lantern was completely traced I created key frames that could quickly change the opacity of the individual shapes to reveal the lantern design part by part. Each shape has its opacity key frames offset where the previous shape’s reveal would cause the following shape to be revealed. Once complete the movie file was imported into mad mapper in addition to a stock Pexel Video movie of a hiking/camping scene, and a sound clip of the wilderness. All assets were aligned together to appeal to the customer in order to have them make purchases at Gray Lantern. In order to have the main focuses of this composition to strictly make camping and being outdoors appealing to the audience I kept the extra map mapper material effects to a minimum. The main reason people go camping and hiking is to find serenity and to escape the noise of urban/suburban living and including extra effects seemed to appeal to more of an urban population rather than the intended customers of Gray Lantern Sporting Goods.

o   Interpretation – The final composition used simple designs and themes to make an appealing advertisement for a sporting goods store. Design choices were made to align with the theme of a sporting good/ camping store and its customers. Through simple animation and subtle sound clips the composition encompasses the calmness of being one with the outdoors.

·         Lantern Composition 2:

o   Concept – For the second lantern design I wanted to focus of the literal purpose and “look” of lantern. Much like one may spend time looking at a campfire fire to marvel I wanted to mimic that appealing factor for light being emitted from a lantern. Dim light in a dark space emphasizes the calming elements of light and that was the driving factor of this design.

o   Process – Similarly to the previous lantern design I traced the individual shapes that made up the lantern design in Aftereffects and then proceed to create a tessellating effect by dropping each shape of the lantern into place one by one. After the effect was complete I worked with several Aftereffect effects to add a glow and gradient to the middle part of the lantern to make it seem like the lantern was actually emitting light. To help create a loop able design I used a burn film effect to disintegrate the lantern before it reappeared again. Once the movie file was ready I imported it into mad mapper and began to layer on materials to make a more appealing image. The background as mentioned in the concept section was kept to be a dark color and I decided on a dark green to complement all the reds in the lantern design.

Final Lantern comp 2

o   Interpretation – Through the incorporation of Aftereffect effects and combination with mad mapper materials I was able to create a composition that embodies the idea of a lantern emitting light within a dark scene. The composition imposes themes of serenity solitude in opposing ways to the other compositions made for this project.
