Paulina Mejia - Project 2 - Tape Mapping

1. Leon Alebrije

Within Mexican culture we have mythical creatures that are a combination of several animals called Alebrijes. They are made up creatures created by their artists so no single one is similar to another. These works are often full of pattern and color that is very typical to Mexican art. For the lion design I wanted to create my own alebrije using only Madmapper settings. Out of my 4 designs this one took me the longest. I wanted to stay true to the multiple patterns and separate colors which required A LOT OF MASKING AND LINE MAKING. Design-wise there was a delicate balance between messy and folk. After finishing, I felt the Madmapper settings alone didn't let me stay true to traditional Mexican art. For this, I imported floral designs. I wanted to create a hybrid between traditional art and the present day of art making. The tough part in this was creating a design that used modern tools and staying true Mexican roots.

2. Coca-Cola

I am fascinated with the cultural changes the Internet is causing. For a commercial design I decided to refer to the genre of Vaporwave which uses 80's lo-fi remixes and twists it with the good feeling of early 90's nostalgia when technology was growing and our childhoods are remembered through outdated commercials often playing on our television screens. To remain true to the aesthetic I incorporated music that best represents the genre and enhances the commercial upbeat of the design. The product is advertised with Japanese text and Japanese commercialism as a symbol of economic growth and technological advancement.

3 & 4. Flight of The Crane

My final two designs were both inspired by the song I. Flight of the Navigator by Childish Gambino. I created designs that best illustrated what I imagine as I listen. I wanted to capture the dream like quality and the human moments he sings about.

In the first one I built up this pixelated hazy galaxy the crane is flying through with an audio sensitive orb of light to make it seems as though this entity is speaking with us about something ephemeral. My biggest technical difficulty in this one was keeping the specific colors I wanted. I feel like choosing a specific color is rather limited in using the Madmapper settings.

My second composition is quite different to the first and reacts to a different section of the same song. In this design I wanted to capture universal human feelings through broken images. I didn't want to create a literal interpretation through video, but more of a suggested feeling, much like a dream when you understand the main feeling but can't explain the specific actions. I had difficulty incorporating the track for this second design. Copyright can be strict :)
